Haley Morris-Cafiero - The Bully Pulpit

Haley Morris-Cafiero takes interest in the actions of people in public forum, physical and virtual. She has developed clever, viral-worthy work that turns gaze back on beholders, “judgers,” even bullies. In The Bully Pulpit Morris-Cafiero investigates cyberbullying. Through costuming Morris-Cafiero assumes the personas of people who have bullied her. Comments about her are integrated into images of Morris-Cafiero dressed-up as the bully who said them.

Bullying is nothing new, and usually a sign of insecurity in the perpetrator. The worst offenders tend to be the least emotionally secure in themselves. By belittling others bullies deflect their insecurity. They solicit followers through fear and inflate their egos by corralling group insecurity. The internet has made it easier than ever to demean people, and unlike words in air, the internet is perpetual- those words will exist-somewhere-forever. Morris-Caffiero has her revenge, though. And as we examine the details of her scenes we find the little signs of self-doubt propping-up the bullies, and think again about how we evaluate and defend others.
