Sayako Sugawara - Pond
Sayako Sugawara’s artwork explores the ephemeral, or rather tries to pull it into a stable, physical world. The artist is a citizen of the world. Sayako Sugawara is a London-based Japanese artist who was born in Milan, Italy. Sugawara works with the still and moving image and installation. Her work plays with serendipity of chance as much as framed awareness.
In her series, Pond, Sayako Sugawara explores her ongoing interest in the notion of a “portal.” Sugawara captured images of the same location over a two year period. She passed this little pond on her daily commute to work. This unassuming space became access to the imagination of the unconscious- a window and a doorway to another mind-space. It is easy to tread the same steps everyday without pause or reflection, but for Sugawara quiet pauses seem to be inspirational opportunities.
I am interested in the nonlinear and reciprocal process of cognitive association which can occur when certain triggers such as places, objects or events are encountered, says Sugawara. Moreover, my fascination extends to the places I can get to through this process.
Indeed, Sugawara’s frames are magical illusions. Space collapses in reflections. What is before us and behind us push into a single visible plane. Compounded layers are both surreal and serene visionscapes. At first we feel tempted to decipher and delineate space, to define and pull apart the frame so carefully crafted. Finding the image seamless, we are suspended. We discover it is more rewarding and liberating to float in the space free of definition than it is to pin it down.
