Transborder Biennial 2018 / Bienal Transfronteriza 2018
June 1 - September 16, 2018
Members' Preview EPMA on May 31 | MACJ on June 1
Three of Paul Turounet's Estamos Buscando | We're Looking For (fragments) were selected for inclusion in an international and trans-border exhibition happening in El Paso and Juárez this summer. Tiajuana and Sasabe will be on view in El Paso; Rio Bravo will be on view in Juárez.
This exhibition is the fifth such collaboration between El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) and the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez (MACJ). This year, Gilbert Vicario, Chief Curator of the Phoenix Art Museum and Carlos E. Palacios, Curator of the Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City, joined MACJ staff and EPMA Curator Kate Green in selecting artists or collectives living along the U.S.-Mexico boundary whose work addresses border conditions.
Thirty artists were selected to contribute work that will display at both museums simultaneously, thus requiring viewers to cross the border to view the whole exhibition. Through the exhibitions' structure, curators heighten the aims of the artists, underline and brake the divide between points. Overall, the exhibition prompts reflection on life in the border region, including issues of crossing, immigration, and physical, linguistic, and cultural hybridity.
