Congratulations to Matt Eich, whose Sin & Salvation in Baptist Town was selected for inclusion in the multi-city initiative THE FENCE. One of the largest traveling photography exhibitions in North America, THE FENCE has stops in eight cities : Atlanta, Brooklyn, Boston, Calgary, Denver, Houston, Seattle, and Sarasota.
Sin & Salvation in Baptist Town is the result of many visits over seven years with a community Eich came to know, respect, and love:
This work stems from my desire to better understand and counteract the deepening racial and socioeconomic rift in America. If images are capable of anything, I hope that they help plant seeds of empathy. Mississippi is a microcosm of a story that plays out in every corner of America. - Matt Eich
THE FENCE was conceived and produced by United Photo Industries, and was developed in partnership with Photo District News in 2011. It was presented for the first time in 2012 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and has since grown and flourished through a series of strategic partnerships with like-minded cultural organizations across the United States. THE FENCE happens in full public view in open-air locations; it aims to “promote a wider understanding and increase access to the art of photography.” With community partnerships, and interactions, THE FENCE creates opportunities for engaging arts programming tailored to each host city.
