Congratulations to Matt Eich whose work is now in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Eich’s Mother’s Day at the Ravanna River, Charlottesville, Virginia, 2018 was included in a 2022 exhibition curated by Barbara Tannebaum for the FRONT International Triennial, Sunlight, Shadow, and A Rainbow, which presented Matt Eich’s work alongside Tyler Mitchell.
This work is exemplary of the more nuanced aesthetic Eich has developed. Yet under 40 years old, Matt Eich, is approaching 20 years of making photographs. This image of a spring day with family and friends at a riverbed is timeless, elegant, and painterly. Like light glimmering across water’s surface, this photograph conjures flashes of our own memories. Idylic and allegorical it seems to acknowledge the transitory nature of life with an effortless whim we know took years of study, practice, and chance to transcribe.
It is particularly meaningful for the artist to enter the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection; Eich earned his undergraduate degree in photojournalism from Ohio University.
