Asymmetric Warfare
February 21 - April 18
Asymmetric Warfare presented by the Colorado Photographic Arts Center (cpac) draws on two ongoing bodies of Justyna Badach’s work, Land of Epic Battles and Proxy War. These gunpowder prints are explosive. By weaponizing her photographs, Badach speaks to the power images have in society in a smart and arresting way.
Badach uses her computer to capture screen shots from ISIS recruitment films and the devastation resulting from the “War on Terror” waged by American and Russian military forces to examine how modern-day military propaganda shapes our perceptions of war and conflict. Of particular interest to Badach is the way both ISIS and the military generate “media that feeds on viewers’ addiction to social media, exploits the voyeuristic lure of reality TV, and nourishes their audience’s desire to watch what is socially taboo,” she writes.
