Several fragments of the border wall photographer Paul Turounet recovered from the US|MX border were not need to create the gallery adapted Estamos Buscando A installation (featured at MOCA Tucson). They have been used by the contemporary artist to create referent fragments. The panels available vary in size and the number of scaled-down plates the can accommodate. Turounet has few segments remaining, and will create unique works of fine art by pairing selected portraits to them. One such work is recommended here. Turounet’s description of it follows.
This remnant fragment of the US|MX border wall is from the original 14 miles of primary fencing that was constructed between 1990 and 1993 from the Pacific Ocean to divide the two countries. The fence was constructed of 10 foot-high steel army surplus landing mats (M8A1) with the assistance of the Corps of Engineers and the California National Guard. The original landing mats were manufactured by the Syro Steel Company in Girard, Ohio in 1968 and were used during the Vietnam War. Each original steel mat measured 22 inches high x 12 feet long and were pieced and welded together to make the border wall. - Paul Turounet
